Rhetoric on the Town: Contrast

Image found on reddit.com/r/adporn

Rhetorical Analysis: The Advertisement is used to show the connection Coca-Cola has with the movies. The advertisement would probably be focused to attract audiences at movie theaters and cinemas. The three images of the coca-cola bottles show the history of Coca-Cola similarly juxtaposed to the progression of motion pictures. Motion pictures are seen in black and white in their early history. The purpose of this advertisement is to show the connection of Coca-Cola with the movie industry. As the movie industry progressed, so has the its product evidenced by the new 3D version of the bottle.

Contrast: Obviously, the advertisements main goal is to compare the differences between the three main types of movies.

Virtual Visibility

Outside of Facebook, I don’t think that I have any visibility on the internet. I hardly make any posts or status updates as it is basically used to just have one.

Google – searched Joshua Hinkle results on the tenth page

Yahoo – non-existent. stopped searching for “Joshua Hinkle” together by the 6th page. although it did come up with a result that said there are 55 people with my first and last name. some professors, MMA, and criminals!

Bing – my first time searching came up with my facebook profile, so I logged off and tried it again and I found another hit on my name when I ran track in highshool. back in 2006 3rd page

detailed discussion of what/how/why you want to do with audio and video

  • I plan on using the script that i have written and superimposing some of the key words on the image. The key words will time with the given script.
  • I plan on using my first image, and then using a typewriter font for the text. This would give the clash of past and present elements to highlight the elements and dynamics of digital writing.

as well as links to at least three Lynda,YouTube and/or other technology tutorials that you’ve watched that might help you with your project.

  • I wanted to use the Lynda tutorial, but I forgot how to login. When it asked for the url of the school that had access, I entered www.odu.edu but it did not work so I’m searching YouTube

Rhetoric on the Town: Balance

Found using Google Image search keywords: Skyfall movie poster

Rhetorical Analysis: The purpose of this movie poster is to announce the new James Bond movie coming out in November 2012. It is to attract attention of movie goers of the date and possibly to show that the movie will be coming out in IMAX as well. It also shows the star of the movie and give credit to the movie companies. The movie poster serves to attract and audience of not only movie goers but possibly those who are familiar with the actor and 007 series .

Design Element Analysis: Balance. A “balanced design is one in which the visual weight of all of the elements are equally dispersed throughout the layout. Visual weight is the illusion of physical weight of a visual element on the page.” Balance is the web design element focused on making sure the “proportions” of a particular layout is distributed in a manner that is harmonious and relevant to the purpose. In this movie poster, there is an excellent use of balance throughout the image. The person is centered in the place with the ‘barrel of gun’ surrounding him on all sides. It shows a symmetrical layout, which is the display of visual elements mirrored from side to side and/or top to bottom. In this case, the background image is mirrored from side to side and top to bottom. Some would call this an element of radial balance since the image is circular in nature. There is significant weight given to the title of movie and date of its release, so that the importance may be discerned.

Citation: http://www.theblaze.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/Obama-Forward-620×332.jpg

Rhetorical Analysis: This image targets voting Americans because of the red white and blue. It could possibly focuses on younger audience because of a lack of American traditional images. The “O”is filled with Obama’s campaign sign, so that they may associate the slogan with his campaign. This might be a stretch but it could be also hinting at  the fact that Obama is half black and half white.

Repetition: The image repeats white coloring and letter imagery on a black background. It focuses on the message of forward. Hints of tunnel imagery. The repeated white coloring centralizes the idea of a new beginning while intimating light in darkness.

What is digital writing? The new note-taking app on your new smart phone.

What is not digital writing? the journal you write in at night.

What is digital writing? blogs, Facebook Magazines, Newspapers E-books

What is not digital writing? passing notes in class Manuscripts and Hieroglyphics

What is digital writing? A digital revolution changing the way we learn and communicate here and now

this would be the second image, to show the world wide connectivity of digital writing. use the lighting to go back and forth

this would show the past and how obsolete such forms of writing have become

basically i would have the words written over the typewriter image until the last sentence, which would feature the second picture

corresponding picture repetition.

i think that I’m going to be using Photoshop Express (the free internet one), and I hope to learn just the basics of editing and possibly image transitions and manipulation. i really have no experience with photo editing software, so learning anything will be awesome. I do think I will be making use of the tutorials

WIKI Project: Individual Reflection

  • What are you most proud of in the entire wiki? For what its worth, I believe the WIKI is surprisingly cohesive in its thought pattern and organization. I like how the hole site turned out with the amount of people working on it. There was a lot of effort that went into it
  • What are you most proud of in terms of your contributions to the wiki? I am most proud of the introduction to the WIKI page. The images are relevant to the topic, but the content is what impressed me the most. It shows my understanding of digital media, but it also gives an inside/outside view of the definition of digital media. I like the answer for why digital media is so important because I struggled to understand its significance in the beginning of the semester.
  • What do you wish you had time to further expand, include, or revise in the wiki? I wish I more time to revise the organization, add more actual “digital media” examples in the introduction, unify and employ the use the annotated bibliographies and hyperlinking (this would add greater navigation and overall understanding as it links topics together), and suggest some of the bookmarked readings for further reading.
  • When did you get stuck while working on the wiki? How did you overcome your problem? I reached a wall in still trying to describe digital media to someone of no background. The notion is so broad and widespread that a true understanding of digital media is hard to come by in just a paragraph. I overcame the problem by thinking back to what I first though digital media was at the outset of class and how I have come to understand it not. This helped the logical progression and came out in a way that anyone unfamiliar with the topic could comprehend.
  • What did you learn about yourself as a collaborative writer? What collaborative skills do you want to work on in the future? I think that I learned a great deal not only in myself as a collaborative writer, but also in experiencing some of the dynamics of group work. In a group, there is one goal. If the group can come to a consensus on the means to achieving that goal, all of the minor aspects seem to fall in place, such as the distribution and execution of work.
  • Discuss at least four of the course outcomes you feel you worked towards with this assignment. Provide evidence of your learning by pointing to specific aspects of the wiki or your project journal.
    • I believe we all tied to employ the use of the C.R.A.P. principles in our work. At least in the home page of the wiki, I tried to organize the content in a linear fashion with headings and corresponding images. This would allow the reader to understand and possibly visualize each of the topics discussed. The video at the end of the page should help give an additional understanding of the significance of digital writing. I also worked on editing the Issue pages (Ethics, Participatory, Transparency), so that they might be uniform in appearance.

Copyright, Fair Use, & Creative Commons

What surprised/empowered/frustrated you?

  • Surprised: I think the most surprising as well as empowering piece of information was realizing the influence all of the regulations have on culture. I first thought that this affected the kind of money generated by a person’s ideas and inventions, but a deeper reason is to limit as well as protect culture. Its reassuring that the at least some of the reasoning behind copyrights and their length go to the preservation of society and not just for commercial reasons.
  • Frustrated: I have been introduced to the ideas of intellectual property before, but what is frustrating is the fact that the definitions of fair use are not definitive, that is to say that they are not explicit. They are guide by four principles in the Copyright Act (nature of work, nature used, extent, and commercial effect) that are left unto the interpretation. I’m not necessarily against the expertise of the lawyers and judges, but it is a lot to be responsible for and mistakes can happen. I guess what is really frustrating is the nature of regulating such a intangible thing.

Two specific examples of copyright/fair use/creative commons and my experiences with them:

  • I suppose an easy target would be any essay or project that I have used with a work cited/annotated bibliography. For any quote, there is a specific amount of words that can be copied before it is considered too much. The Fair(y) Use Tale had to exhibit certain a certain length of sound bytes before the use would need permission from the author. It was a clever use of Fair Use in and of itself.
  • I, too, have had friends that have engaged in file sharing that may or may not have been legal. I myself choose not to endeavor in that path even though the chances of being charged for the crime are highly unlikely, but upon principle.

MINI as that

Uploaded on The Ads of the World.com Forum

Rhetorical Situation: In the driving community, MINI’s are recognized for their drivability. They are not huge cars, so they have to focus on the fun one may have in driving one of their vehicles. The audience would appeal to those who cannot drive a manual transmission (almost all of USA), but wish to without the use of a third pedal (the clutch). The advertisement focuses on the new addition of the tiptronic transmission representative of the “+” and “-“, which is symbolic for a Tiptronic transmission (an automatic transmission that employs a system that can manually control the gears). This is also a feature that was prevalent in higher end cars and most famously in Lamborghini’s and Ferrari’s. This would help those of a lesser buying power to feel as if they had purchased one of their vehicles (also taking into the handling ability of the MINI Cooper). The advertisement also focuses on buyers who enjoy a car company that is simplistic in nature. There is no statement of price. There is only the introduction of a new system. This tells buyers that the car company is for those who are not worried about price, but only about the car.

Design Emphasis: The advertisement emphasizes the introduction of the new driving system of the MINI Cooper S. It features nothing else but a  + and – sign to show the simplicity of driving a MINI. It reaches out the driving community that enjoys the use of an automatic transmission that operates like a manual or more experience driving. It is used to appeal to both audiences in this fashion. The saying “MINI AS THAT” refers to the saying “It’s as simple as that” which emphasizes usability of driving a MINI. It has a small border that organizes the view. When one looks for more info after the initial look, they are drawn to the information at the bottom.

Lax: “Access Denied”

Posted by TheAdmin on October 2, 2012

This article delves into the idea of equality and access in a new media society. As with all societies, there is no sure thing of complete equality among peoples. I find it hard to find any representational society that does not exhibit signs of diversity. In the same way, Stephen Lax examines the differences created within the internet community. He looks at the argument of information and communications technologies (aka. the internet) creating a fairer society that is based upon abilities and the worth of an individuals contributions, which he terms as a meritocracy. However, does this take into account the financial status of individuals who come from areas of poverty and inequality? Lax argues two types of inequality: equality of opportunity and outcome. Outcome seeks to close the gap between the rich and the poor while opportunity tries to give help to the less fortunate by giving them a boost.

In this context, he introduces the idea of technological determinism, which states that “technology develops independently of society and in doing is the central cause of consequent social “impacts.” The idea is arguably debatable, for it only takes a simple investigation to find society’s impact on technology.

What Lax concludes is the help of governments to regulate access to technology. I think of public libraries funded by the general public that offers access to any individual with an address and idea.

Questions:

What I wonder about in the interest of a fairer community is the same differences between a democratic and socialistic government? The more power that is given to government invariably takes away from the people, which necessarily can’t become a good thing. Free speech and censorship will always be at odds; that fact in undeniable. However, the real question is whether or not it is right to govern that aspect of equality?

Interests:

I really enjoyed learning about the ICT’s as a meritocracy. It is a nice reality to see on the internet on many forums and blogs the judgment of quality based upon content rather than any other lesser value, say popularity. It is quite evident on sites like reddit.com and the various car forums that I am one. I have to say that I have learned a lot just from my fellow “peers” and their experiences.
